About Maluku

Ambon is the capital and largest city of Indonesia's Maluku province, set on Ambon Island around the deep, sheltered waters of Ambon Bay. Often called Ambon Manise ('beautiful Ambon'), the city combines a busy port, steep green hills and a strong musical identity; in 2019 it became the first city in Southeast Asia to be named a UNESCO City of Music.

Once known as Amboina, Ambon played a central role in the historic spice trade, when cloves and nutmeg drew Portuguese, Dutch and British powers to the Moluccas. That layered past survives at landmarks such as Fort Victoria, a restored Dutch fort in the city centre, together with World War II memorials, churches and mosques that reflect the city's Christian and Muslim communities.

The waterfront and surrounding districts hold much of Ambon's appeal. The Merah Putih Bridge spans Ambon Bay and is a modern city symbol, while the Pattimura Monument, Siwalima Museum and lively Mardika area offer history, culture and everyday local life. Outside the centre, beaches such as Natsepa, Pintu Kota, Liang and Namalatu provide swimming, snorkelling and sunset views.

Local food is part of the experience, from papeda (sago porridge) and ikan kuah kuning (turmeric fish soup) to colo-colo sambal and the peanut-sauce fruit salad rujak Natsepa. Music performances, church and community choirs, markets and nearby diving spots round out a visit, while the port connects travellers onward to the Banda Islands and other parts of the Moluccas.

For business and leisure travellers alike, Ambon is the main gateway to Maluku, with government offices, trade, fisheries and a growing services sector alongside its natural and cultural attractions.
