About Maluku

Ambon is the capital and largest city of Maluku province in eastern Indonesia, set on Ambon Island and wrapped around Ambon Bay. Known locally as Ambon Manise, or "beautiful Ambon", the city has long been a gateway to the Spice Islands and remains the regional centre for trade, administration, education and transport in the Maluku archipelago.

The city's history is closely tied to the nutmeg and clove trade. Portuguese and later Dutch colonisers shaped its early development, and that past survives in colonial-era fortifications, historic churches, Commonwealth war graves and the landmark Pattimura Monument honouring a local independence hero. The Merah Putih Bridge, which spans Ambon Bay, is one of eastern Indonesia's most recognisable modern structures.

Ambon's appeal extends well beyond the city centre. The Siwa Lima Museum documents Maluku's cultural and maritime heritage, while beaches such as Natsepa, Liang and Namalatu offer white sand and clear water within easy reach. Around the bay, Laha and other dive sites are internationally known for muck diving and rich marine life.

As the capital of Maluku, Ambon hosts provincial government offices, the main seaport at Yos Sudarso, universities and a busy trade sector. Everyday life centres on markets, waterfront eateries and districts such as Sirimau and Nusaniwe, giving the city a lively but unhurried character.

Food is a highlight for many visitors. Local specialities include papeda, a sago porridge served with yellow fish soup known as ikan kuah kuning, plus grilled fish, sago-based snacks and the fruit salad rujak Natsepa. For leisure travellers, Ambon offers beaches, diving and island culture; for business visitors, it is the practical hub for government, commerce and onward travel across Maluku.
