About Gorontalo

Gorontalo is the capital and largest city of Gorontalo Province on the northern Minahasa Peninsula of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It faces the Gulf of Tomini and is one of Sulawesi's oldest urban settlements, with a history stretching back roughly 400 years alongside Makassar, Parepare and Manado.

The city's past is shaped by the Kingdom of Gorontalo, the spread of Islam from the 15th century and later Dutch colonial rule. Fort Otanaha, a hilltop stone fortress built around 1522 with Portuguese assistance, stands above the city together with the smaller forts Otahiya and Ulupahu.

Waterfront and urban landmarks include the Tangga 2000 steps overlooking Gorontalo Bay, Taruna Remaja square and the city's mosques. Just outside Gorontalo, Olele Marine Park and Botubarani village are known for whale shark encounters and diving over the rare Salvador Dali coral reef.

As the provincial capital, Gorontalo is a centre of government, trade and services, supported by fisheries, agriculture and small businesses. Its evening food scene is lively around areas such as Kalimadu and the old town district.

For travellers, the city is a compact gateway to the region's diving, whale sharks, waterfalls and coastal scenery, while offering a manageable mix of history, local cuisine and everyday provincial life.
