About Quiché

Santa Cruz del Quiché is the capital of Guatemala’s Quiché Department and a compact highland city set at about 2,021 metres above sea level. It is the historic and cultural heartland of the K’iche’ Maya, and the surrounding valleys and pine-covered hills give the city a cool, highland character despite its role as a departmental administrative centre. The city’s story is closely tied to Q’umarkaj, also known as Utatlán, the capital of the K’iche’ kingdom founded around 1400 and located just outside the modern city. After the Spanish conquest in 1524, colonial settlement developed around the present-day central plaza, and the wider Quiché region later suffered deeply during Guatemala’s civil war. Today, churches, a central park and living Maya ceremonies reflect the city’s layered identity. The most important attraction is the Q’umarkaj archaeological site, where visitors can see plazas, temple platforms, a ball court and cave shrines still used for Maya ceremonies. In the centre, Parque Central and the nearby cathedral offer an introduction to local life, while the famous market town of Chichicastenango lies about 30 kilometres to the south. As a regional service centre, Santa Cruz del Quiché has banks, markets, hotels, small restaurants and transport connections to surrounding municipalities. Local food includes pepián, tamales, atoles and other Guatemalan highland dishes, and the August feast of Santa Elena de la Cruz is one of the city’s biggest annual events. The city is a practical base for travellers interested in highland Maya history, regional markets and the wider Quiché countryside. It also serves business and NGO visitors working on government, development and community projects across the department.
