About Chiquimula

Chiquimula is the capital of Guatemala's eastern Chiquimula Department and is widely known as La Perla de Oriente, or the Pearl of the East. Set roughly 170 kilometres from Guatemala City on the route toward Honduras and El Salvador, it functions as a commercial and transport hub for the country's dry eastern corridor.

The city's Spanish colonial past remains visible around the centre, from the restored Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Tránsito and the ruined arches of the Iglesia Vieja to the Neoclassical Templo de Minerva and the shaded Parque Ismael Cerna. Ch'orti' Maya heritage also shapes local culture, alongside Ladino traditions and religious festivals.

Central Chiquimula is compact and walkable, with the market, bus terminal, hotels and restaurants concentrated near the main plaza. Just beyond the city, visitors travel to the Basilica of the Black Christ in Esquipulas, one of Central America's most important pilgrimage sites, or climb the Volcán de Ipala to its crater lagoon.

Commerce, transport and public services drive the local economy, and the city serves as a gateway for trade and travel across eastern Guatemala. Its food scene blends Guatemalan staples with regional eastern dishes, including grilled meats, atol, tamales and sweets, while cafés and small restaurants cluster around the centre.

For travellers, Chiquimula offers a practical base between the capital and the eastern border regions, with a warm climate, accessible services and a strategic position for visiting Esquipulas, Ipala and nearby rural communities.

Chiquimula Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable time for exploring Chiquimula, with sunny days and easier road access to Esquipulas and Ipala. The rainy months from May to October are greener but can bring afternoon downpours; August is busy around the feast of the Virgen del Tránsito.

How to Get Around

Central Chiquimula is walkable, and local taxis and tuk-tuks handle short trips within the city. Buses and microbuses run from the terminal to surrounding towns and onward destinations such as Guatemala City, Zacapa and the Honduran and Salvadoran border areas.

Where to Stay

Most hotels are located near the centre and along the main roads, close to the bus terminal, market and restaurants. Visitors heading to Esquipulas often base themselves in Chiquimula for wider services, while Esquipulas itself offers lodging near the basilica.

Food & Drink

Chiquimula's food ranges from market snacks and Guatemalan breakfasts to eastern-style grilled meats and regional dishes such as yuca con chicharrón, tamales and atol. The area around the central park and bus terminal has the densest mix of comedores, cafés and casual restaurants.
