About Saint Patrick

Saint Patrick is the northernmost parish of Grenada, centered on the coastal town of Sauteurs and known locally as the Agriculture Parish and the Historical Parish. Its landscape mixes fertile hills, working farms, fishing villages and a rugged north coast lined with bays and small offshore islands.

French and colonial history is strongly present here. The name Sauteurs, meaning jumpers, recalls Leapers Hill, where the island's last Carib inhabitants are said to have leapt into the sea in 1651 rather than surrender. Historic estates, old churches and plantation buildings remain scattered across the parish.

Visitors come for natural and cultural landmarks such as Bathway Beach, the protected lagoon and mangrove coastline of Levera National Park, and the offshore Sugar Loaf Island. Between April and August, leatherback turtles nest on Levera Beach, making it one of the most significant turtle-watching sites on the island.

The parish is also a center of Grenadian agriculture and food heritage. Nutmeg, cocoa, bananas and other spices are grown throughout the hills, while Belmont Estate offers working plantation and chocolate experiences and the historic River Antoine Rum Distillery has produced rum with water-powered equipment since the late 1700s.

Less commercialized than the south-west coast, Saint Patrick appeals to travelers seeking nature, history, beaches and authentic island life. Its farms, estates and small tourism businesses also make it relevant for agri-business, eco-tourism and heritage-focused visitors, all within about an hour and a half's drive of Maurice Bishop International Airport.

How to Get Around

Minibuses run between Sauteurs and St George's, while taxis and rental cars are useful for reaching remote beaches, estates and the rum distillery. Roads are hilly and winding, so allow extra time or hire a local driver.

Where to Stay

Sauteurs offers guesthouses and small hotels with ocean views, while the coast near Bathway and Levera has beachfront and eco-lodge options. Rural hillside stays around Petite Anse and Hermitage suit travelers seeking quiet.
