About East Macedonia and Thrace
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is Greece's northeastern administrative region, stretching from the Aegean coastline to the Rhodope Mountains and bordering Bulgaria and Turkey. Its administrative capital is Komotini and its largest city is Alexandroupoli, while the region also includes the regional units of Drama, Kavala, Xanthi, Rhodope and Evros along with the islands of Thasos and Samothrace.
The region's long history is visible in landmarks such as the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Philippi, the ancient walls and aqueduct of Kavala, and the colourful Ottoman-era old towns of Xanthi and Komotini. On Samothrace, the Sanctuary of the Great Gods was where the famous Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered, and Byzantine churches, mosques and clock towers reflect centuries of cultural exchange.
Coastal cities and inland towns offer distinct experiences. Kavala climbs from a lively harbour to the old Panagia quarter and its Kamares aqueduct, while Alexandroupoli is known for its lighthouse and seafront promenade. Xanthi's restored tobacco warehouses and old bazaar, Drama's springs and caves, and the beaches and mountain villages of Thasos are among the region's most visited destinations.
The regional economy combines busy ports, agriculture, food production and growing tourism. Events such as the Xanthi Carnival, Kavala's Philippi Festival and Cosmopolis programme, along with local wine routes and a food scene built on seafood, local cheeses and Thracian dishes, add to its appeal for visitors.
Natural areas such as the Evros Delta, the Nestos River gorge and the Dadia–Lefkimi–Soufli forest give the region strong appeal for outdoor travellers, while the Egnatia Odos motorway and border crossings make it a practical gateway between Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey for leisure and business trips alike.
