About West Coast
The West Coast Region, also known as the Western Division, is The Gambia's most populous and fastest-growing region, stretching south and west from the Greater Banjul area to the Atlantic coast and the Senegalese border. Its capital and largest town is Brikama, a busy market and transport hub that serves as the administrative centre of the region.
The coastline is the region's best-known feature, with long sandy beaches and lively fishing communities at Tanji, Brufut, Sanyang and Gunjur. Tanji is famous for its colourful fishing harbour and the nearby Tanji Bird Reserve, while Sanyang offers one of the country's most popular beach settings.
Brikama is known for its woodcarving and craft market, where visitors can see drums, masks and carvings made by local artisans, and it remains an important centre for Gambian music traditions. The town's busy streets, market stalls and transport links give it a distinctly local, energetic character.
Nature reserves such as Abuko Nature Reserve and Bijilo Forest Park protect forest, monkeys and birdlife close to the urban coast. The region's economy combines fishing, agriculture—especially groundnuts and horticulture—and tourism, with beach lodges, restaurants and craft markets serving international visitors.
Banjul International Airport is located at Yundum in the West Coast Region, making the area the main gateway for visitors arriving by air. The region offers a practical base for leisure travellers seeking beaches, culture and nature, as well as for business travellers attending meetings and events around the coast.

West Coast Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to May is the most comfortable time to visit the West Coast, with lower humidity and little rain. The Harmattan months of December to February bring cooler mornings, while the rainy season from June to October is greener but can bring heavy showers and hot, humid days.
How to Get Around
The region is served by shared taxis, minibuses known locally as gelly-gellys and bush taxis along the South Bank and coastal roads. Private transfers, chauffeur services and rental cars offer more flexible travel between Brikama, the beaches and Banjul International Airport.
Where to Stay
Coastal areas such as Bijilo, Brufut, Sanyang and Tanji offer beach hotels, eco-lodges and guesthouses, while Brikama provides budget-friendly accommodation and a more local atmosphere. Many visitors choose the coast for easy access to beaches and the airport.
Food & Drink
Local dishes include domoda, a rich peanut stew, benachin (jollof rice) and yassa, often served with fresh fish from coastal fishing centres such as Tanji. Street stalls and markets offer attaya green tea, wonjo (hibiscus) and baobab juice.
