About Lower River
Lower River Region lies along the south bank of the Gambia River and is one of The Gambia's five administrative regions. Its capital is Mansa Konko, while Soma serves as the region's busiest commercial and transport town. The area is mostly rural, with Mandinka farming communities, groundnut and rice fields, and a relaxed pace of life.
The region's name and identity are rooted in local history. Mansa Konko means "hill of kings" in Mandinka, a reference to the chiefly seat that once stood here; under British rule it became an administrative centre, and a few colonial-era buildings still survive around the town.
Kiang West National Park is the region's best-known attraction, protecting around 115 km² of savanna woodland, riverine forest and seasonal wetlands. The park is home to baboons, warthogs, antelope and more than 300 bird species, and offers a quieter wildlife experience than the coastal reserves.
Soma is the region's practical heart, standing where the main east-west South Bank Road crosses the Trans-Gambia Highway. The town links the coast with upcountry Gambia, the Farafenni river crossing to the north bank and southern Senegal's Casamance, making it a busy market and onward-travel hub.
For travellers, Lower River works well as a stopover and as a base for exploring rural Gambia, river landscapes and Kiang West. It appeals to overland visitors heading to or from Senegal and to those seeking a more traditional, less developed side of the country away from the Atlantic resorts.
