About Ngounié
Mouila is the capital of Ngounié province in south-central Gabon and a quiet administrative town set on the Ngounié River. National Road 1 runs through the town, connecting it with Libreville to the north and the southern provinces of Gabon, which makes Mouila a practical stopover for travellers moving through the interior.
The town is best known for Lac Bleu, a striking blue lake that is the main local attraction, and for the nearby Bongolo hydroelectric dam, which supplies electricity to Mouila and neighbouring towns such as Ndendé and Tchibanga. These sites, together with the river and surrounding savanna and forest, give Mouila a calm, provincial character rooted in central Gabon.
Daily life in Mouila is organised around the town centre, the market, government offices and roadside commerce. The market offers fresh produce, fish and everyday goods, while small guesthouses, restaurants and bars serve residents and the limited number of visitors passing through the province.
The local economy is based on provincial administration, agriculture, timber and small-scale trade. The area is home to Punu and Nzebi communities, and French is the official language, with local languages also widely spoken.
For travellers, Mouila works as a base for exploring Ngounié, visiting Lac Bleu and the Bongolo dam, or taking a break on the long N1 route between Libreville and the south. Business visitors mainly come for government-related work, agriculture and forestry, while independent travellers value the town's simple, unhurried atmosphere.

Ngounié Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from about June to September is the most comfortable time to visit, with better road conditions for reaching Lac Bleu and travelling along National Road 1. The rainy season can make some roads muddy and slower to navigate.
How to Get Around
Mouila is small enough to walk for many central journeys, while shared taxis and motorcycle taxis handle short trips around town. For visits to Lac Bleu, the Bongolo dam or nearby areas, a private car or chauffeur is more practical.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is concentrated in and around the town centre, mostly small hotels and guesthouses aimed at business and transit travellers. Staying near the market or the main road keeps restaurants, shops and transport within easy reach.
Food & Drink
Local eating is based on Gabonese staples such as manioc, plantain, fish, chicken and palm-nut sauce, served in small restaurants and maquis. The central market is a good place to see fresh produce and sample everyday dishes, with cold drinks and local beverages widely available.
