About Eastern

Levuka is Fiji's first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage-listed port town on the rugged east coast of Ovalau island. It is the administrative centre of the Eastern Division and one of the South Pacific's best-preserved colonial settlements, with a quiet, unhurried character far removed from Fiji's larger resort destinations.

The town grew in the early 19th century as a trading and whaling port, then became the capital of the British colony after Fiji was ceded to Britain in 1874. The Deed of Cession was signed at nearby Nasova in 1874, and Levuka remained the seat of government until 1882, when the capital moved to Suva. That brief capital era left a compact legacy of colonial architecture that earned the town UNESCO World Heritage status in 2013.

Most historic sites line Beach Street, the waterfront road set between the sea and steep green hills. Landmarks include the Royal Hotel, which claims to be the oldest operating hotel in the South Pacific, the Sacred Heart Church with its clock tower, the Ovalau Club, the 1898 Town Hall and Levuka Public School. Visitors can climb Mission Hill's 199 steps for harbour views, visit Totoga Falls or trace the town's many firsts, including Fiji's first school, newspaper and post office.

Beyond the town, Ovalau and the nearby Lomaiviti islands offer fishing, diving, hiking and village visits, making Levuka a base for exploring a quieter, more traditional side of Fiji. Access is usually by road and ferry from Viti Levu via the Natovi and Buresala landings, or by small aircraft to Bureta airstrip when flights operate.

Levuka suits heritage-minded leisure travellers, small groups and anyone interested in Pacific history more than large-scale tourism. It offers a rare view of 19th-century colonial life, genuine local hospitality and a relaxed pace, while remaining a working town with a strong sense of its own past.

Eastern Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to October is the most comfortable time to visit Levuka, with cooler, less humid weather, calmer seas and more reliable ferry connections. November to April is the wetter cyclone season, when heavy rain can affect roads and travel plans.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is small-scale and limited, so it is wise to book ahead. Options include heritage stays such as the Royal Hotel, family-run guesthouses, homestays and simple lodges in or near the town centre.

Food & Drink

Levuka's food mixes Fijian and Indo-Fijian cooking, with fresh seafood, kokoda, lovo feasts, curries and root vegetables such as cassava. The local market, small cafés and historic spots like the Royal Hotel and Ovalau Club provide informal places to eat and drink.
