About La Vega
La Vega is the capital of La Vega Province and one of the oldest European settlements in the Americas, set in the fertile Cibao Valley of the Dominican Republic. The city is best known for its spectacular February Carnival, when elaborately costumed Diablos Cojuelos fill the streets, but it also holds a quieter identity as an agricultural and religious centre.
Founded in 1494 near the present-day ruins of La Vega Vieja, the original settlement was destroyed by an earthquake in 1562 and later rebuilt on the banks of the Río Camú. Its Immaculate Conception Cathedral, completed in the early 1990s, stands out for an unusual modernist design resembling a castle.
Visitors can explore the archaeological remains of La Vega Vieja, the hilltop pilgrimage site of Santo Cerro with its sanctuary and panoramic Cibao views, and the Light of the World monument and Sacred Museum. Nearby mountain towns such as Jarabacoa and Constanza offer waterfalls, coffee farms and cooler highland escapes within the same province.
La Vega serves as a commercial and transport hub for the Cibao region, with agriculture, trade and logistics central to the local economy. Markets sell fresh produce from surrounding farms, while cafés and restaurants serve Dominican staples alongside strong local coffee; annual events include the Merengue festival and religious celebrations.
Its position roughly midway between Santo Domingo and Santiago, and its proximity to Cibao International Airport, make La Vega an easy base for travellers combining carnival culture, history and mountain excursions with business trips across the Cibao Valley.
