About Vukovar-Syrmia
Vukovar is a river city in eastern Croatia, set where the Vuka River meets the Danube near the border with Serbia. As Croatia's largest river port, it has long been a crossroads between Slavonia and Syrmia, and today it is best known as a symbol of resilience after the devastating 1991 Battle of Vukovar.
The city's history reaches back around five thousand years, with the nearby Vučedol archaeological site and its famous Vučedol Dove among the most significant prehistoric finds in this part of Europe. A medieval royal free town, Vukovar later gained an elegant baroque core, and the 18th-century Eltz Manor now houses the Vukovar City Museum.
Landmarks such as the preserved Vukovar Water Tower, which still bears wartime damage, define the skyline and the city's identity. Along the Danube, visitors can explore the riverside promenade, the baroque town centre and sites of remembrance including the Ovčara Memorial Centre, the Memorial Cemetery of Homeland War Victims and the Place of Remembrance at Vukovar Hospital.
Beyond the centre, districts such as Borovo Naselje, a former Bata workers' settlement, show a different side of the city, while river cruise ships connect Vukovar with destinations upstream and downstream along the Danube. Local restaurants serve Slavonian and Syrmian dishes, and the surrounding hills and nearby Ilok area form one of Croatia's oldest wine regions.
For business travellers, Vukovar's Danube port, agriculture and food-processing industries keep the city economically active, while conferences and commemorative events draw visitors throughout the year. Leisure and business guests alike find a compact, historically rich destination that offers both reflection and a genuine sense of eastern Croatian life.
