About Moyen-Chari

Sarh is the capital of Chad's Moyen-Chari region and one of the largest cities in the south of the country. Known locally as the green city, it sits between the Chari River and the Barh Kôh River and serves as an important commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural areas. The city was founded as Fort-Archambault in 1899 during the French colonial period and took the name Sarh in 1972, after the Sara people of the region.

The city's history remains visible in its colonial-era buildings and monuments, including the Bretonnet monument and the 1950s Cathedral of Sarh. The Musée régional de Sarh displays regional ethnographic and archaeological collections, while the central market offers a lively view of daily trade and local life.

Sarh is divided into several arrondissements and stretches along the Chari, which is central to everyday activity. Popular spots include the riverside, the airport and SNE roundabouts, the central market and the cathedral area. The surrounding countryside is known for agriculture, fishing and traditional Sara culture.

As a regional economic hub, Sarh links southern Chad with the capital N'Djaména, about 565 km to the northwest, and lies roughly 120 km from the Central African Republic border. Cotton, food processing and trade support the local economy, and the city remains a base for development and humanitarian missions in the south.

For travellers, Sarh offers a quieter and greener alternative to Chad's northern cities, with river views, local heritage and practical connections for business or regional journeys. Its small airport and road links make it a useful entry point for exploring southern Chad.

Moyen-Chari Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to February is generally the most comfortable time to visit Sarh, with lower humidity and more reliable roads. The rainy season, roughly May to October, brings heat, heavy downpours and more difficult travel conditions in rural areas.

How to Get Around

Within Sarh, motorbike taxis and shared taxis are the main forms of local transport, with walking practical in the compact centre. For longer trips around the region, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, especially outside the dry season.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is concentrated in and near the city centre, close to the market, cathedral and main roads. Options are generally modest, ranging from small hotels and guesthouses to simpler lodgings used by business and NGO travellers.

Food & Drink

Local food centres on millet, sorghum and rice served with sauces, along with freshwater fish from the Chari and Barh Kôh rivers. Grilled meat, peanut sauces and seasonal produce are common, and the central market and small cafés are good places to sample everyday Chadian dishes.
