About Salamat
Am Timan is the capital of the Salamat Region in southeastern Chad, set on the Bahr Azoum river. It is a compact market and administrative town that serves as the main commercial and transport hub for a large, sparsely populated part of the country.
The town grew from a small settlement into a French colonial administrative post and later a regional capital. Today it remains low-rise and practical, with a central market, mosques, government offices and simple guesthouses, while the seasonal river and surrounding floodplains shape daily life.
Am Timan is best known as the gateway to Zakouma National Park, a major Central African wildlife reserve roughly 45–60 km to the southwest, and to the Bahr Salamat floodplains and faunal reserve. Within the town, the central market and Friday cattle market are the main points of local life.
Infrastructure is limited and travel is easiest in the dry season, generally from December to March. Most visitors arrive by road from N'Djamena or through the small Am Timan Airport, and independent movement around the region usually requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The town matters to business and conservation travellers as a regional base for trade, livestock, agriculture, NGOs and wildlife work, while leisure visitors use it mainly as a starting point for Zakouma and the wider Salamat landscape.

Salamat Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from December to March offers cooler temperatures and passable roads, making it the most practical time for travel around Am Timan and to Zakouma National Park. The rainy season from June to September brings heavy rains that can make regional routes difficult.
How to Get Around
Am Timan is small enough to explore on foot or by moto-taxi, while regional travel generally requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Flights and charter connections use Am Timan Airport, and the road from N'Djamena is a long, often rough journey.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Am Timan is limited to simple guesthouses and small lodges, so it is wise to arrange stays in advance. Visitors heading to Zakouma often combine a night in town with camps or lodges near the park.
Food & Drink
Local eating centres on market food such as millet and sorghum dishes, rice, grilled or stewed meat, and dried fish, with tea stalls and small restaurants around the market. Supplies are limited, so remote travel requires carrying water and food.
