About Mayo-Kebbi Ouest
Pala is a small but strategically placed town in southwestern Chad and the capital of the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest region. Located near the Cameroon border on the road corridor between Moundou and Léré, it functions as an administrative, trading and transport hub for a largely rural, cotton-growing hinterland.
The town's population is ethnically and linguistically diverse, with Moundang, Toupouri, Ngambaye, Fulani and other communities living side by side. Fula is widely spoken, while French and Arabic serve as Chad's official languages. Pala has been a Roman Catholic centre since the mid-20th century and is home to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
Agriculture dominates the local economy, especially cotton, which is processed at a modern ginning plant. Pala is also known as the site of Chad's first industrial gold mine, developed by South Korean company Afko, and artisanal gold working continues in the surrounding area.
For travellers, Pala is a practical base for reaching Mayo-Kebbi Ouest and the nearby Cameroon border region. The town is served by Pala Airport and offers basic hotels, markets, restaurants and moto-taxis, making it relevant for business visits tied to agriculture, mining and regional administration.
