About Lac

Lac is a region in western Chad built around the Chadian shore of Lake Chad, with Bol as its capital and main town. Long dry-season landscapes, lake channels, sand dunes and fishing communities give the area a distinct Sahelian character that differs sharply from the capital, N'Djamena, about 330 km to the southwest.

Historically, the Lake Chad basin has been a crossroads of Kanem-Bornu influence and the earlier Sao culture. Bol grew as a lakeside trading and fishing centre, and its markets, pirogue builders and Kanembu and Buduma communities continue that long connection to the water.

The main experiences centre on the lake itself: boat trips into the channels and floating reed islands, birdwatching, and visits to fishing settlements such as Baga Sola. In Bol, the lakeside market and harbour are the natural focus, with sand dunes and open Sahel beyond the town.

The region remains important for fishing, small-scale farming and cross-border trade, and it attracts humanitarian, research and development organisations working across the Lake Chad basin. Infrastructure is modest, and overland travel is usually arranged with local drivers or 4x4 vehicles.

For travellers, Lac is a destination for landscape, culture and a slower look at life on Lake Chad rather than conventional city tourism. It suits independent visitors, researchers and business or NGO teams needing access to the lake's communities.

Lac Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

November to February is the most practical period, with cooler dry-season weather and easier lake access by boat. The mid-year rains can make rural tracks difficult, while the hottest months are uncomfortable for outdoor travel.

How to Get Around

Bol is usually reached by road from N'Djamena, a drive of roughly 330 km that is best made in a 4x4. Within the town and around the lake, moto-taxis, private vehicles and pirogues are the main options, and Bol-Berim Airport provides a limited air link.

Where to Stay

Bol has a small selection of simple guesthouses and lakeside lodges, with basic comfort close to the market and harbour. Travellers wanting more facilities often overnight in N'Djamena and use Bol as a day or overnight base for lake excursions.

Food & Drink

Fresh fish from Lake Chad, including tilapia and Nile perch, is central to local meals, often served grilled or in stews with millet, sorghum and rice. Small markets, tea stalls and simple restaurants in Bol provide the main eating options.
