About Kanem

Mao is the capital of Chad's Kanem Region, a Sahelian oasis town on the edge of the Sahara roughly 226 km north-northeast of N'Djamena. It is the traditional seat of the Sultan of Kanem and a small administrative and trading centre for the Kanembu, Wodaabe and Arab communities of the region.

The town's identity is rooted in the Kanem-Bornu heritage. Mao was founded in 1898 by Sultan Ali, and the Alifa of Mao has long exercised semi-autonomous authority in Kanem. The Sultan's Palace and the Grand Mosque remain central landmarks, while the small Kanem Museum displays pottery, weapons, musical instruments and maps explaining the region.

Mao lies among sand dunes and sparse Sahelian vegetation. Its market brings together dates, salt, livestock and grain, and the town serves as a gateway for travellers heading toward the desert or Lake Chad. Traditional mud-brick architecture gives the centre a distinctive Saharan character.

Visitors can explore the dunes, the market and the Sultan's court, and may encounter local festivals including Wodaabe traditions. The town is remote and is normally reached by 4x4 over sand tracks or by small aircraft to Mao Airport, making advance planning and local guidance valuable.

As the capital of Kanem Region, Mao also hosts government offices, NGOs and regional trade links. Its combination of Sahelian culture, desert landscape and administrative role attracts both adventurous leisure travellers and business visitors working in the region.

Kanem Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The most comfortable months are November to February, when temperatures are cooler and the dry-season desert landscape is easiest to explore. April and May are extremely hot, while the brief rainy season can make sandy tracks harder to use.

How to Get Around

Mao is a compact town where the centre, market and mosque can be reached on foot or by motorcycle taxi. For travel outside town, including dunes and nearby villages, a 4x4 vehicle is essential because most routes are unpaved sand tracks.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Mao is limited to a small number of guesthouses and simple lodgings, with camping common for desert travellers. Many visitors use Mao as a stopover and keep longer stays in N'Djamena, which has more hotels and services.

Food & Drink

Local meals are built around millet, sorghum, dates, goat and camel meat, often served with tea. The market is the best place to find fresh dates and staple foods, while restaurants are basic and seasonal produce depends on supplies from the surrounding oasis gardens.
