About Central Greece
Central Greece, known in Greek as Sterea Ellada, is a large mainland region stretching from the Gulf of Corinth to the Aegean Sea and including the long island of Euboea (Evia). It combines ancient archaeological sites, forested mountains, thermal springs and quiet coastal towns, while remaining easily reached from Athens.
The region's heritage is among the richest in Greece. Delphi, set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, was the sanctuary of Apollo and the site of the famous oracle, while Thermopylae recalls the battle of 480 BC. Thebes and the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas add further layers to the area's classical and medieval history.
Towns and districts vary widely. Lamia is the administrative capital, Chalkida is the largest city and sits beside the fast-changing Evripos Strait, and the mountain resort town of Arachova is a popular gateway to Parnassus. Livadeia, Karpenisi and coastal villages on Evia each offer a different pace, from stone-built mountain centres to seaside relaxation.
Beyond tourism, Central Greece is part of the Athens–Thessaloniki transport corridor and has a long tradition in agriculture, fishing and local food production. Restaurants and markets feature mountain herbs, cheeses such as formaella and feta, roast meats, honey and fresh seafood, alongside local wine and seasonal festivals.
For travellers, the region works well as a flexible destination for history, nature and business stopovers. Its archaeological sites, ski slopes, beaches and easy road access make it relevant for both short leisure breaks and professional visits between Athens and northern Greece.

Delphi and Arachova are convenient for the archaeological site and Mount Parnassus, while Chalkida suits travellers looking for a coastal base on Evia. Lamia works well as a central stopover, and Karpenisi offers mountain lodges and nature-focused accommodation.
