About Centre-Ouest

Koudougou is Burkina Faso's third-largest city and the capital of the Centre-Ouest region, set about 100 kilometres west of Ouagadougou along the Abidjan–Ouagadougou railway. Often called the "City of the Red Rider", it combines a busy market-town character with a growing student population and a strong role as a regional administrative and trading centre.

The city's modern identity is rooted in its colonial and independence-era history. Maurice Yaméogo, the first president of Upper Volta, was born here, and the city grew from an early 20th-century administrative post into an important regional hub. Landmarks such as the palace of Maurice Yaméogo and the ruins of the Lallé Naaba palace recall that layered past.

Koudougou's central market is one of its most distinctive landmarks. Inaugurated in 2005 and built in stabilised earth, the market won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007 and remains the commercial heart of the city. Nearby, the Musée Rayimi in the Issouka district presents local history, crafts and traditions, while the sacred crocodile ponds at Sabou offer a short regional excursion.

The city is also an education and cultural centre. Université Norbert Zongo, formerly the University of Koudougou, brings students and academic activity to the area, and the Nuits Atypiques de Koudougou festival draws musicians and audiences each November. Agriculture, trade and small-scale services anchor the local economy, with a textile heritage linked to the former Faso Fani factory established during the Thomas Sankara era.

For travellers, Koudougou is a practical gateway to the Centre-Ouest region. Its rail and road connections link it with Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, while motorbike taxis, buses and private transfers serve movement around the city. Visitors come for the festival, markets, heritage and regional business, making it a useful base for both leisure and work trips.

Centre-Ouest Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit Koudougou, with lower humidity and easier road travel. November is also when the Nuits Atypiques de Koudougou festival brings music and cultural events to the city.

How to Get Around

Motorbike taxis are the most common way to move around Koudougou, and the central market area is walkable for short trips. Long-distance buses and shared taxis connect the city with Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, while the railway station offers occasional passenger services.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is concentrated in the central sectors near the market and main roads, which keeps restaurants, banks and transport within easy reach. Quieter guesthouses and hotels can also be found around the university area and along the main routes into town.

Food & Drink

Local meals often centre on tô, a sorghum or millet dough served with leaf, vegetable or meat sauces, alongside rice, grilled meat and brochettes. Maquis and small cafés serve drinks and simple dishes, while the central market offers fresh produce and street food.
