About Boucle du Mouhoun
Dédougou is the capital of Burkina Faso's Boucle du Mouhoun region and Mouhoun province, a trading and administrative centre in the country's west about 230 km from Ouagadougou. The town sits in a gently rolling landscape shaped by the Mouhoun River, also known as the Black Volta, which gives the surrounding region its name.
Dédougou is best known as the host of FESTIMA, the International Festival of Masks and the Arts, held every two years in late February. The festival brings together mask troupes from across West Africa and highlights the Bwa tradition of tall painted plank masks, alongside music, dance and craft markets. Around the town, the central market, the Place de la Femme monument and nearby sacred sites and traditional villages offer a view of local daily life and heritage.
The town centre is organised around its busy market and main commercial streets, with lively sectors and surrounding villages extending into farmland. Visitors often use Dédougou as a base for exploring the Mouhoun valley, the pottery village of Tchériba and the small towns of the Boucle du Mouhoun region, where markets, weavers and dyers keep local crafts active.
Dédougou is a regional hub for cotton, cereals, livestock and trade, with the SOFITEX cotton ginning plant among its most important industries. National roads connect the town to Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, making it a practical stop for business travel, logistics and regional administration.
For leisure travellers, FESTIMA and the surrounding cultural landscape are the main draws, while business visitors find a compact administrative and commercial centre. A visit works best when matched to the dry season and to festival dates, when the town is at its most animated.
