About Temburong

Temburong is Brunei's easternmost district, separated from the rest of the country by Brunei Bay and the Malaysian territory of Limbang. Often called the 'Green Jewel of Brunei', it is the least populated district and one of the best preserved rainforest destinations in Southeast Asia.

The district's centrepiece is Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei's first national park, protected since 1991. Visitors reach the park by longboat along the Temburong River and can climb to a canopy walkway for views over primary rainforest, with waterfalls, jungle trails and rich wildlife including hornbills, gibbons and butterflies.

The small administrative town of Bangar is the gateway to the district, with local shops, markets, a mosque and riverside jetties. Nearby, the 26.3-kilometre Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Bridge, opened in 2020, links Temburong directly to Brunei-Muara and is Southeast Asia's longest bridge.

Temburong's appeal is strongly eco-tourism focused: longboat river trips, guided jungle treks, village visits and stays in rainforest lodges. Local Malay and indigenous communities shape the district's culture, while Malay is the official language and English is widely spoken.

For travellers, Temburong offers a quiet contrast to the capital Bandar Seri Begawan. Leisure visitors come for nature and adventure, while the new bridge connection makes the district more accessible for day trips, small-scale events and growing eco-tourism business activity.

Temburong Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Brunei has a warm, humid tropical climate all year. The drier months, generally from February to April, are the most comfortable for jungle trails and canopy walks, while heavy rain is common from October to January.

How to Get Around

Bangar is compact and easy to explore on foot. The district can be reached by the Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Bridge from Brunei-Muara or by a roughly 45-minute speedboat from Bandar Seri Begawan, and longboats handle river access into Ulu Temburong National Park.

Where to Stay

Bangar has a small selection of guesthouses for travellers wanting local convenience. For direct access to Ulu Temburong National Park, rainforest lodges and eco-resorts along the Temburong River offer guided stays, while many visitors also base themselves in Bandar Seri Begawan for day trips.

Food & Drink

Local eating in Temburong centres on Bruneian and Malay dishes such as ambuyat, nasi katok, satay and grilled fish, served in small cafés, markets and food stalls in Bangar. Options are modest, so park lodges typically provide meals as part of overnight packages.
