About Distrito Federal
Brasília is the capital of Brazil and the seat of the federal government, built on the central plateau and inaugurated in 1960 as a purpose-built modernist capital. Designed by urban planner Lúcio Costa with landmark architecture by Oscar Niemeyer, the city forms an airplane-like layout when seen from above and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city's plan centres on the Monumental Axis and the Residential Axis. Along the Monumental Axis stand the National Congress, the Cathedral of Brasília, the Palácio do Planalto, the Supreme Federal Court and the Three Powers Square, while the Itamaraty Palace, JK Memorial and TV Tower add further architectural character.
Districts such as Asa Sul, Asa Norte, Lago Sul and Sudoeste each offer a distinct rhythm, from the superblocks and tree-lined residential streets of the Plano Piloto to lakeside leisure areas around Paranoá Lake. Cultural visits often include the National Museum of the Republic, the Santuário Dom Bosco, the JK Bridge and Pontão do Lago Sul.
As the seat of ministries, congress, embassies and international organisations, Brasília is Brazil's political and administrative centre and a major business destination. Its calendar includes architecture and design events, music festivals and a growing gastronomy scene that blends regional Cerrado ingredients with contemporary and international dining.
Brasília appeals to both leisure and business travellers: visitors come for its unique urban design, architecture tours and cultural institutions, while professionals attend government meetings, conferences and events. The city's planned layout, lakeside areas and warm climate make it a distinctive Brazilian destination throughout the year.

Distrito Federal Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to September brings sunny days, clear skies and lower humidity, making it the most comfortable period for walking tours and outdoor sightseeing. The rainy season from October to April is warmer and greener, with afternoon showers that rarely disrupt most plans.
How to Get Around
Brasília's metro has two lines connecting the Plano Piloto with satellite cities, and a large bus network covers most administrative regions. Because the city is spread out and planned around wide avenues, many visitors combine ride-hailing, taxis or rental cars with walking within central sectors.
Where to Stay
The Setor Hoteleiro Norte and Sul place you near the Monumental Axis, government buildings and major landmarks, ideal for business trips and first visits. Asa Sul and Asa Norte offer residential convenience, Lago Sul has upscale lakeside options, and Águas Claras or Taguatinga provide more affordable bases with metro access.
Food & Drink
Brasília's food scene ranges from regional Goiás and Cerrado dishes such as pequi and pamonha to churrascarias and contemporary Brazilian restaurants. Asa Sul and Asa Norte have lively bars and cafés, while Pontão do Lago Sul and the Setor Comercial Sul offer dining with lake or city views.
