About Jwaneng
Jwaneng is a small, well-planned mining town in southern Botswana, about 170 kilometres southwest of the capital Gaborone. Its identity is shaped by the nearby Jwaneng diamond mine, often called the 'Prince of Mines', which ranks among the richest diamond mines in the world by value.
The town grew after De Beers geologists identified the kimberlite deposit in the early 1970s and Debswana began mining in 1982. Today Jwaneng is one of Botswana's more prosperous settlements, with modern housing, schools, sports facilities and services that reflect its role in the national diamond industry.
Nearby Jwana Game Park covers a former mining lease and supports wildlife including cheetahs, with a field unit of Cheetah Conservation Botswana. The surrounding Kalahari landscape offers open savanna and bush, giving the town a gateway feel for travellers heading deeper into southern Botswana.
Jwaneng's economy is centred on diamond production, engineering, logistics and supporting services, making it a destination for mining-related business travel. The town is connected by road to Gaborone and sits along routes toward the Kalahari and the South African border.
For leisure travellers, Jwaneng works best as a practical stopover or base for the southern Kalahari and nearby communities, while its mine-town character, wildlife area and modern amenities give business visitors a comfortable, focused stay.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to September brings cooler days and clearer skies, making it the most comfortable time to visit Jwaneng and the surrounding Kalahari. Summer months from November to March are hot with occasional thunderstorms.
How to Get Around
Jwaneng is small enough to walk or use local taxis for short trips around town. For the mine, Jwana Game Park, Gaborone or Kalahari routes, private transfers and rental cars are the most practical options.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Jwaneng is limited and mostly consists of guest houses and lodges serving business travellers. Gaborone, about two hours away by road, offers a wider range of hotels for visitors combining the two destinations.
Food & Drink
Local meals centre on Setswana staples such as seswaa (pounded beef), bogobe (sorghum porridge) and grilled meat, with simple restaurants, takeaways and shops in town. Options are modest, so many longer-stay visitors also stock up in Gaborone.
