About Atakora
Natitingou, known locally as Nati, is the capital of Benin's Atakora Department and the main town of the country's mountainous northwest. Set at the foot of the Atakora range, it serves as the gateway to Somba country and to Pendjari National Park, one of West Africa's most important wildlife reserves.
The town grew as a French colonial administrative seat and today remains the region's political and trading centre. Its Regional Museum displays local history and ethnography, while the surrounding countryside is famous for the Tata Somba, the fortified multi-storey mud houses of the Tammari and Betammaribe people, whose Koutammakou cultural landscape extends into neighbouring Togo.
Visitors use Natitingou as a base for the Kota and Tanougou waterfalls, hiking and viewpoints in the Atakora hills, lively central markets and excursions to traditional villages. The town itself is compact and practical, with hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and transport links concentrated along its main road.
For business travellers, Natitingou functions as a regional administrative and agricultural trade hub, with links to cross-border commerce and the farming communities of the surrounding communes. For leisure travellers, it offers a calmer, culturally rich starting point for exploring northern Benin's landscapes, traditions and wildlife.

Atakora Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to March is the most practical time to visit, with clearer roads and better wildlife viewing in Pendjari National Park. The rainy season, roughly June to September, turns the hills green but makes some rural tracks harder to use.
How to Get Around
In Natitingou, short trips are easy by motorcycle taxi (zemidjan), while shared taxis connect the town with surrounding communes. A 4x4 with a driver is the most reliable way to reach Pendjari National Park, waterfall sites and Somba villages in the Atakora hills.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses are in central Natitingou, close to the main road and market. For wildlife visits, lodges and camps near Pendjari National Park offer a convenient overnight base, while some rural stays use traditional Tata Somba-style architecture.
Food & Drink
Local eating is centred on maquis and market stalls serving yam, millet and maize dishes, grilled meat and sauces, often with wagasi, the soft cheese made by Fulani communities. Millet beer and palm-based drinks are widely available, and Cotonou-style and West African restaurants add variety.
