About Northern

The Northern Governorate covers the northwestern part of Bahrain Island together with Umm an Nasan, combining coastal towns, traditional farming villages and fast-growing residential areas. It is one of Bahrain's four governorates and sits close to the capital, Manama, while offering a noticeably calmer, more local atmosphere.

The area is rich in archaeological heritage. The Dilmun Burial Mounds around A'ali and Hamad Town form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ancient Barbar Temple remains reveal links to Bahrain's Dilmun past. Traditional craft, pottery and farming traditions survive in villages such as Jasra, Bani Jamra and Diraz.

Key places include Budaiya with its botanical garden, market and coastal farms, the Royal Camel Farm in Janabiyah, and the residential districts of Hamad Town, Saar, Hamala and Jannusan. The King Fahd Causeway, which connects Bahrain to Saudi Arabia, begins in the governorate and makes the area a practical gateway for road travel across the Gulf.

The Northern Governorate blends village life, heritage sites, modern housing and convenient access to Manama. Its peaceful coastal roads, local produce markets and proximity to business districts and the causeway give it appeal for both leisure visitors and business travellers looking for a quieter base in Bahrain.

Northern Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

November to March offers the most comfortable weather for exploring the Northern Governorate's outdoor heritage sites, coastal roads and villages. Summer months are very hot and humid, so sightseeing is best planned for mornings or evenings.

Taxis, ride-hailing services and rental cars are the most practical ways to move between Budaiya, Hamad Town, Hamala and nearby attractions. A car is especially useful for reaching the King Fahd Causeway, burial mound fields and smaller villages.

Where to Stay

Budaiya, Saar and Hamala offer quieter residential and resort-style stays, while Hamad Town has a more local feel. Many visitors also base themselves in Manama for wider hotel choice and easy day trips into the Northern Governorate.

Food & Drink

Local bakeries, traditional cafés and restaurants serve Bahraini dishes such as machboos, grilled fish and fresh bread, particularly around Budaiya and the coastal villages. International dining and shopping-area cafés add further variety in Hamala, Saar and Jannusan.
