About Central Andros

Central Andros is the middle district of Andros Island, the largest island in The Bahamas, and one of the country's most peaceful and nature-focused destinations. Its flat, low-lying landscape is shaped by pine forest, mangrove creeks, wetlands and more than 180 blue holes, with Fresh Creek serving as the main settlement and transport gateway.

Water is central to life and travel here. Bonefishing flats, the Andros Barrier Reef — the world's third-largest barrier reef — and inland and ocean blue holes draw anglers, divers and eco-travellers. Small settlements such as Fresh Creek, Cargill Creek, Behring Point and Staniard Creek are strung along the Queen's Highway on the island's eastern coast.

The district reflects traditional Bahamian island life, with fishing, crabbing and sponging heritage and a strong craft tradition. Fresh Creek is home to the Androsia batik factory, where the island's distinctive hand-dyed fabric is made, and to the 1892 Andros Lighthouse, which marks the entrance to the Fresh Creek channel. The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Centre (AUTEC) is also based nearby.

Visitors come to Central Andros for Blue Holes National Park, guided bonefishing, reef diving and snorkelling, and kayaking through quiet mangrove creeks. The district is reached from Nassau by short domestic flights into Andros Town International Airport or by daily ferry service into Fresh Creek.

For leisure travellers, Central Andros offers uncrowded nature, world-class flats fishing and a slow, local pace rather than large resorts. For business and government-related travel, the area has small lodges, local businesses and facilities such as AUTEC, while its proximity to Nassau keeps it practical to reach.
