About Savaneta
Savaneta is a small coastal town and region on Aruba's southeastern shore, known as the island's oldest settlement and its first capital until 1797. Today it offers a quieter, more local alternative to the resort areas around Oranjestad and Palm Beach, with a working fishing tradition, calm waters and a relaxed Caribbean pace.
Much of Savaneta's character comes from its history. The old village still holds a cas di torto, a roughly 150-year-old mud-and-stone house considered the oldest surviving home in Aruba, along with modest churches and lanes that recall the Spanish and Dutch colonial period before Oranjestad became the capital.
Nearby Mangel Halto is one of the area's best-known natural attractions, with shallow turquoise water, mangroves and good snorkeling and kayaking access. Savaneta is also within easy reach of Arikok National Park and the De Palm Island ferry, making it a useful base for outdoor excursions.
Seafood is central to local life. Waterside restaurants such as Zeerover, Flying Fishbone and Old Man and the Sea are known for fresh catch and toes-in-the-sand dining, while small snack bars and local kitchens serve Caribbean and Dutch-influenced dishes.
For travellers, Savaneta works well as a low-key base with convenient access to Queen Beatrix International Airport, the beaches of the south coast and the larger attractions of Aruba. Its mix of heritage, nature and local dining appeals to leisure visitors and business travellers seeking a calmer island setting.
