About San Nicolaas Zuid

San Nicolaas Zuid is the southern coastal district of San Nicolaas, Aruba's second-largest town, located on the island's quieter Sunrise Side. It runs toward the southeastern tip of Aruba and combines residential neighbourhoods, arid coastal scenery and some of the island's best-known southern beaches.

Much of the area's identity comes from the Lago Oil & Transport refinery, which operated from 1924 until 1985 and drew workers from across the Caribbean and beyond. After the refinery closed, San Nicolaas reshaped itself around culture and tourism, while its Afro-Caribbean heritage and English-speaking roots remain an important part of local character.

San Nicolaas Zuid is best known for Baby Beach, a sheltered turquoise lagoon that is ideal for swimming and snorkelling, alongside the quieter Rodgers Beach and the wind-swept shoreline at Boca Grandi, a popular kitesurfing spot. Further south, Seroe Colorado offers a lighthouse, rugged coastal views and fishing traditions, while nearby downtown San Nicolaas is known for colourful street art, the Community Museum and the long-running Charlie's Bar.

The district includes neighbourhoods such as Lago Heights and Seroe Colorado, with beach bars, local snack stands and a growing number of vacation rentals. Its mix of calm beaches, open-air art, Carnival traditions and easy access to Arikok National Park makes it relevant for leisure travellers, while small creative businesses and day-trip logistics also serve visitors and local enterprises.
