About Armavir

Armavir is a small city in western Armenia and the administrative centre of Armavir Province, set on the fertile Ararat Plain about 45 kilometres west of Yerevan. Once an important settlement along historic routes, it now functions as a regional hub for agriculture, food processing and local government.

The modern city grew from the settlement of Sardarapat, founded in 1931, and was later known as Hoktemberyan before taking the name Armavir in 1995. It is named after the nearby ancient city of Armavir, one of the early capitals of Armenia, and the surrounding region preserves layers of Urartian and Armenian history.

The province is best known for its historic landmarks rather than a large city centre. Nearby Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) holds the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and UNESCO-listed churches, while the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral and the Bronze Age site of Metsamor lie within easy reach. The Sardarapat Memorial and Ethnographic Museum, about 11 kilometres southeast of the city, commemorates the 1918 Battle of Sardarapat and displays Armenian folk culture.

Armavir's economy is tied to the Ararat Valley, with orchards, vineyards and wine and brandy production playing a central role. Its location between Yerevan and the Turkish border makes it a practical base for exploring the western Ararat Plain and Armenia's early Christian heritage.

For travellers, Armavir offers a quiet, low-rise contrast to the capital, with straightforward access to Yerevan and Zvartnots International Airport. It suits visitors interested in history, rural landscapes, local produce and the religious landmarks of the surrounding region.

Armavir Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early autumn offer mild weather for visiting the Ararat Plain and nearby historic sites. Summers can be hot and dry, while winter is cooler and quieter.

How to Get Around

Armavir is a compact city, but many key sites lie outside the centre, so taxis, private drivers or rental cars are the most practical options. Marshrutka minibuses and buses connect the city with Yerevan and nearby towns such as Vagharshapat.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited in Armavir itself, so many visitors base themselves in Yerevan or in Vagharshapat near the major church sites. A small number of local guesthouses and hotels serve the area.

Food & Drink

The Ararat Valley is known for apricots, grapes, fresh produce, wine and brandy. Local restaurants and roadside stops serve Armenian dishes such as khorovats, lavash and seasonal fruit.
