About Santa Fe

Santa Fe is the capital of Santa Fe Province in northeastern Argentina, located where the Salado River meets the Paraná and the Setúbal lagoon system. Founded in 1573 by Juan de Garay as Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz, it is one of Argentina's oldest cities and today functions as a compact, walkable provincial capital.

Its historic core is centred on Plaza 25 de Mayo, surrounded by the Casa de Gobierno, the Catedral Metropolitana and the Manzana Jesuítica, a former Jesuit block now home to museums. The city hosted constitutional conventions in 1949, 1957 and 1994, a legacy reflected in the Museo de la Constitución Nacional, while the Puente Colgante suspension bridge and the riverfront costanera frame the waterfront.

Neighbourhoods such as Barrio Sur, with its historic buildings and museums, and Barrio Candioti, known for its traditional streets, cafés and nightlife, give the city a distinctive local character. Visitors can explore the Museo Histórico Provincial, the Museo Etnográfico y Colonial, riverside parks and the lively costanera paths that connect the urban centre to the Paraná shoreline.

As a government, university and agro-industrial centre, Santa Fe is home to the Universidad Nacional del Litoral and serves a productive agricultural region. Its food scene highlights river fish such as sábalo, boga, pacú and dorado, along with the alfajor santafesino and local beer, making the city appealing for both leisure and business travellers.
