About Salta
Salta is the capital of Salta Province in northwestern Argentina, set in the green Lerma Valley against the foothills of the Andes. Known as "Salta la Linda", or "Salta the Beautiful", it combines colonial architecture, Andean traditions and a relaxed pace that make it one of Argentina's most distinctive regional capitals.
Founded in 1582, the city preserves one of Argentina's best-kept colonial centres around Plaza 9 de Julio. Landmarks include the pink Catedral Basílica de Salta, the 18th-century Cabildo, the Church and Convent of San Francisco with its landmark tower, and the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña (MAAM), home to the Inca child mummies found on the Llullaillaco volcano.
The historic centre is compact and walkable, while nearby areas such as the Calle Balcarce corridor come alive at night with peñas offering live folk music and regional food. The San Bernardo cable car rises from Parque San Martín to a hilltop viewpoint over the city, and the leafy suburb of San Lorenzo offers woodland trails just minutes away.
Salta is also the gateway to northwest Argentina's most celebrated landscapes, including the Calchaquí Valleys, the wine town of Cafayate, Cachi and the high-altitude Train to the Clouds. This role supports a busy tourism economy alongside regional commerce, agriculture and a growing events and conference scene.
For travellers, Salta works equally well as a cultural city break and as a base for day trips into the surrounding valleys, wineries and Andean routes. Its airport, central location and year-round dry-season appeal make it a practical hub for both leisure visitors and business travellers exploring northern Argentina.

Salta Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) offer mild days and generally clear skies. The dry season from April to November is ideal for excursions to Cafayate and the Calchaquí Valleys, while summer brings hotter weather and afternoon rain.
How to Get Around
Salta's historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Local SAETA buses, taxis and remises cover the wider city, and the San Bernardo cable car provides a scenic route up to the viewpoint. Rental cars are useful for trips to Cachi, Cafayate and other valley destinations.
Where to Stay
The area around Plaza 9 de Julio and Calle Balcarce is central for landmarks, museums and peñas. San Lorenzo offers a quieter, greener setting on the edge of the city, while hotels near the bus station and airport suit travellers using Salta as a regional base.
Food & Drink
Salta's cuisine is built around empanadas salteñas, tamales, humitas and locro, often accompanied by Torrontés wine from nearby Cafayate. Peñas on and around Calle Balcarce pair folk music with regional dishes, and the Mercado San Miguel is a good place to sample local produce and everyday food.
