About Namibe
Moçâmedes, commonly called Namibe, is a coastal city in southwestern Angola and the capital of Namibe Province. It sits where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, with a working port, broad bayside avenues and a low-rise colonial-era centre that give the city a calm, distinctive character.
Founded by the Portuguese in 1840, the settlement grew as a fishing and port town and was known as Namibe between 1985 and 2016. Its colonial buildings, palm-lined streets and the Moçâmedes Railway linking the coast to the interior reflect that layered history.
The bayside Marginal and Avenida Eduardo Mondlane anchor city life, while the municipal market, Praia das Miragens and nearby Lagoa dos Arcos are popular stops. Further afield, Iona National Park and the ancient Welwitschia mirabilis plants of the Namib Desert draw nature-focused visitors.
Fishing, port logistics and services remain central to the local economy, and the city increasingly serves as a gateway for desert and coastal tourism. For both leisure and business travellers, Moçâmedes works as a practical base for the southern desert coast, Iona National Park and onward journeys into Namibe Province.
