About Lunda Norte
Dundo is a city in northeastern Angola and the capital of Lunda Norte Province, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It developed around the diamond industry and still feels shaped by its mining past, while serving as the administrative centre for one of Angola's most resource-rich regions.
The city's modern identity began in the early twentieth century with the diamond company Diamang, which built housing, services and infrastructure. Its best-known cultural institution is the Dundo Regional Museum, an ethnographic and natural history collection particularly known for Chokwe art. Landmarks include the Obelisk of Dundo, marking the site where the first diamonds were discovered, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
Dundo combines an older mining-era centre with newer residential expansion areas such as Dundo Nova. Around the centre visitors find local markets, administrative buildings and the small airport, while the surrounding Lunda landscape offers a gateway to rural Chokwe communities and diamond-mining areas.
Diamond production remains central to the local economy, and the city functions as a regional hub for government, commerce and services linked to mining and cross-border trade. Business travellers generally come for mining, infrastructure and administrative work, while leisure visitors are drawn mainly by the museum and the chance to experience Chokwe culture.
For both leisure and business travellers, Dundo offers a practical base in northern Angola with a distinctive cultural and industrial heritage, best visited with planning for its remote location and limited tourism infrastructure.

Lunda Norte Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to September is the most practical time to visit Dundo, with lower rainfall and better road conditions. The rainy season from November to April can make rural routes muddy and harder to reach.
How to Get Around
Within Dundo, shared taxis and motorcycle taxis are the main local options, and many central points can be reached on foot. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for trips outside the city, while scheduled flights connect Dundo Airport with Luanda.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is concentrated near the city centre and the airport, mostly guesthouses and small hotels used by business travellers. Choices are limited, so booking ahead is sensible, especially during periods of mining and government activity.
Food & Drink
Local food is built around Angolan and Chokwe staples such as funge, cassava, fish and palm-oil stews. Meals are found at small restaurants, markets and informal eateries, often with Portuguese culinary influences.
