About Cunene
Ondjiva is the capital of Angola's southern Cunene province, a compact administrative and trading centre roughly 40 kilometres north of the Namibian border. Formerly known as Vila Pereira d'Eça, the city sits at the heart of the Kwanyama, or Owambo, cultural area and serves as the main urban gateway to southern Angola.
The region's identity is strongly tied to the Oukwanyama kingdom and King Mandume ya Ndemufayo, the last Kwanyama king, who died in 1917. His memorial complex near Namacunde, about 45 kilometres from Ondjiva, preserves his grave and a historic baobab tree, while a statue of the king stands in the city's central square.
Beyond the city, Cunene offers the Ruacaná Falls and Monte Negro Falls along the Cunene River, the Mupa National Park, and Embala Grande, where several Oukwanyama kings are buried. The river bridge, rural markets and the border town of Santa Clara, with its crossing to Namibia's Oshikango, add to the area's practical and cultural interest.
Ondjiva's economy revolves around cross-border trade, logistics, agriculture and livestock, with the Santa Clara border post linking Angola to Namibia's road network. This position makes the city relevant to business travellers, traders and officials as well as to visitors exploring the far south of Angola.
Domestic flights connect Ondjiva to Luanda through Ondjiva Pereira Airport, while roads lead toward Namibe, Huíla and the Namibian border. The combination of Kwanyama heritage, frontier trade and nearby natural sites gives Ondjiva a distinctive place among Angola's provincial capitals.
