About Paktia

Gardez is the capital of Paktia Province in southeastern Afghanistan, set at roughly 2,300 metres above sea level in the Sulaiman Mountains. Its name means "mountain fortress" in Middle Persian, and the city has long served as a crossroads on routes linking Kabul with Khost and the Pakistani border.

The old town and the nearby Gardez Citadel, known locally as Bala Hesar, reflect a long and layered history. Archaeological finds include Greek, Sassanid, Hephthalite and Turk-Shahi coins, and the wider region carries Buddhist-era heritage from its time under the Mauryan Empire.

Central Gardez is built around the bazaar and residential quarters, while Paktia University lies in the northern part of the city beside the Kabul–Gardez highway. Markets, local workshops and surrounding farmland give the city a distinctly regional, highland character.

As the administrative and commercial centre of Paktia, Gardez is important for trade, government offices and regional road connections. The Gardez–Khost highway links the province with neighbouring Khost, and the city functions as a practical base for travel across southeastern Afghanistan.

Visitors with proper local arrangements can use Gardez as a gateway to mountain landscapes, nearby districts and the historic routes of eastern Afghanistan. It is a modest but significant stop for those interested in the region's history and geography rather than a conventional tourist destination.

Paktia Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for visiting Gardez, with milder daytime temperatures. Summers are dry, while winters are cold and often snowy at the city's high elevation.

How to Get Around

Gardez has limited formal public transport, so most movement relies on shared taxis, private vehicles and pre-arranged drivers. The main roads connect the city with Kabul and Khost, and the compact centre can be explored on foot.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited to local guesthouses, mainly around the city centre and bazaar area. Many visitors choose to base themselves in Kabul and travel to Gardez for day or overnight trips with local support.

Food & Drink

Local food is centred on Pashtun cooking, including grilled meat, rice dishes, naan and tea. Small eateries and bazaar stalls serve simple, freshly prepared meals throughout the city.
