About Faryab
Maymana, also spelled Maimana, is the capital of Faryab Province in northwestern Afghanistan, close to the Turkmenistan border. Set at roughly 877 metres on a terrace of the Qeysar River, it is a compact provincial centre of bazaars, mosques and traditional Central Asian character.
The city has ancient origins; its citadel dates back to the early Iron Age, and nearby finds at Bilchiragh include Paleolithic and later material. Maymana later became the seat of an Uzbek khanate and an important trading point between northern Afghanistan, Herat and Central Asia. In the 20th century parts of the old city were rebuilt, and the former citadel area became a park.
Maymana is known for its markets, mosques and largely Uzbek population, with Uzbek, Dari and Pashto widely spoken. The national Ring Road connects the city with Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul, while the Aqina crossing links Faryab to Turkmenistan. The old city park, central bazaars and surrounding agricultural districts are among its most recognisable features.
As the provincial capital, Maymana serves regional administration, trade and transport. Agriculture, carpets, livestock and cross-border commerce shape the local economy, and the city has a university and a domestic airport. Its bazaars act as gathering points for people from districts across Faryab.
Faryab remains a security-sensitive area, so independent travel requires careful planning, reliable local guidance and current advice. For travellers with appropriate arrangements, Maymana offers a distinctive view of Afghanistan's Uzbek-majority northwest and its historic trade routes.
