About Heard Island and McDonald Islands
Heard Island and McDonald Islands is a remote Australian external territory in the southern Indian Ocean, roughly 4,000 km southwest of Perth. Uninhabited and strictly protected, the islands form a UNESCO World Heritage-listed nature reserve known for their untouched subantarctic landscapes and wildlife.
Heard Island, the largest of the group, is dominated by the Big Ben massif and Mawson Peak, an active volcano rising about 2,745 m. Glaciers cover most of the island, while the smaller McDonald Islands are rugged, volcanic and largely ice-free. The surrounding marine reserve protects an important breeding habitat for penguins, seals and seabirds.
There are no permanent settlements, ports or roads. Human activity is limited to research and carefully managed expeditions coordinated by the Australian Antarctic Division, and visitors require a permit before travelling.
Because the territory has no airports, harbours, highways or public transport, access depends on expedition vessels sailing from Australia or other regional ports. Once ashore, movement is on foot or by small boat, so journeys are planned around weather, landing conditions and permit requirements rather than conventional transport networks.
