About Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands are a remote British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, lying about 480 km off the coast of South America. The archipelago pairs windswept, open landscapes with abundant wildlife and a strong maritime identity, making it a distinctive destination for nature-focused and history-minded travellers.
The capital, Stanley, is the centre of island life and services. Its colourful corrugated-iron houses, working harbour, Christ Church Cathedral with its whalebone arch, and small museums reflect British and seafaring heritage. Beyond Stanley, the population is spread across sheep-farm settlements and outer islands known locally as camp.
East and West Falkland form the two main islands, surrounded by hundreds of smaller islands. The terrain ranges from rocky hills, white-sand beaches and sheltered coves to peatlands, tussock grass and dramatic coastal cliffs. Wildlife is the main draw: five penguin species, black-browed albatrosses, elephant seals, sea lions, dolphins and many seabirds can be seen at close range.
History also shapes a visit. Sites linked to the 1982 conflict, early settlement and maritime heritage sit alongside working farms and research stations. Cruise ships and expedition vessels are a common way to arrive, while scheduled flights connect the islands with the UK and South America.
Mount Pleasant Airport, about an hour from Stanley, is the main international gateway, and the Falkland Islands Government Air Service links Stanley with outer-island settlements. A small road network and left-hand driving make transfers, chauffeur services and rental vehicles practical for moving between the airport, hotels, wildlife sites and points of interest.
