About Christmas Island

Christmas Island is a small Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,600 kilometres northwest of Perth. Despite its size, it offers a distinctive mix of tropical rainforest, rugged coastline, coral reefs and abundant wildlife, making it an unusual destination for nature lovers and divers.

The main settlement is Flying Fish Cove, which serves as the island's capital and port. Other small communities such as Poon Saan, Silver City and Drumsite are scattered across the island, while landmarks including The Dales, Dolly Beach and the Blowholes draw visitors across the territory.

Most of Christmas Island is protected within Christmas Island National Park, which covers rainforest, sea cliffs, caves and shorelines. The island's history is shaped by phosphate mining and a multicultural community with Chinese, Malay, European and Australian influences, reflected in its temples, food and local events.

The island is best known for the annual red crab migration, when millions of land crabs move from the forest to the sea between October and January. Birdwatching, snorkelling, diving and visits to historic mining sites add to its appeal.

Christmas Island Airport connects the territory with scheduled flights from Perth and some regional charter routes, while a limited network of sealed and unsealed roads links settlements, beaches and natural sites. Rental vehicles and local transport support journeys between the airport, accommodation and key destinations.
