About Virgin Islands (British)
The British Virgin Islands is a small Caribbean territory made up of more than 60 islands and cays, known for calm sailing waters, coral reefs and an unhurried island pace. Its appeal centres on the sea, from protected anchorages and white-sand beaches to a strong charter-yachting culture, while the islands remain quieter and less developed than many nearby destinations.
Tortola is the largest island and home to Road Town, the capital, as well as the main ferry terminal, marinas, shops and restaurants. Virgin Gorda is best known for The Baths, a striking shoreline of granite boulders, caves and pools, while Jost Van Dyke is associated with laid-back beach bars and Anegada, a low coral island, is known for its long beaches and reef-protected waters.
The territory blends a British colonial heritage with a distinctly Caribbean way of life. Historic sites, plantation ruins and small churches sit alongside fishing villages and modern marinas, and local cuisine draws on seafood, West Indian and Caribbean influences. Sailing, snorkelling, diving and island-hopping are among the most common ways visitors spend their time.
As a British Overseas Territory, the British Virgin Islands is a well-known sailing and charter destination and an established offshore financial centre. It also welcomes cruise visitors, particularly around Road Town, while smaller islands and anchorages provide a more secluded experience.
Ferry services link the main islands, and taxis and rental vehicles are available on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, just across the bridge from Tortola, is the main air gateway, and many visitors arrive via connecting flights or ferries from the nearby US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
