About RAAF Woomera Airfield
RAAF Woomera Airfield is a military airfield in the far north of South Australia, located about 6 km north of Woomera township and roughly 485 km north of Adelaide. It supports RAAF Base Woomera and the Woomera Test Range, which together form part of the RAAF Woomera Range Complex.
The airfield grew out of the mid-20th century rocket and weapons testing programs that established Woomera as a major defence and aerospace site. Today it remains an operational Royal Australian Air Force facility rather than a commercial passenger airport.
Its airfield infrastructure includes a main asphalt runway, 18/36, about 2,372 metres long, and a secondary gravel runway, 12/30, about 1,614 metres long. The airfield sits at an elevation of around 549 feet and offers GPS and NDB approaches.
Access is via the Stuart Highway through the nearby settlements of Pimba and Woomera township. Because it is a controlled defence site, visitors should arrange entry and ground transport in advance, with the small township providing accommodation, dining and local services.
