About White River Seaplane Base

White River Seaplane Base (YWR) is a seasonal water aerodrome serving White River and the surrounding Algoma District of northern Ontario. Rather than a conventional runway airport, it provides a floatplane landing area used mainly for charter and fly-in flights to remote lakes, fishing and hunting outposts.

Located about 7 km (4.6 mi) north northeast of White River, the base is operated by White River Air Service and is open when the water is ice-free, typically from May to October. Use of the aerodrome requires prior permission, reflecting its role as a small, operator-run facility rather than a scheduled passenger terminal.

White River itself sits at the junction of Highway 17, the Trans-Canada Highway, and Highway 631, and is known as the home of the real bear that inspired Winnie the Pooh. From the seaplane base, travellers can continue by road to Wawa, Marathon, Lake Superior and other destinations across northern Ontario.

With limited shore-side facilities and a focus on wilderness access, the aerodrome offers a practical starting point for outdoor travellers. Visitors should confirm flight arrangements and local services with the operator before arrival, especially during the short summer operating season.
