Weipa Airport is the main airport serving Weipa, a mining town on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland. It provides essential domestic and regional air connections for residents, fly-in fly-out workers and travellers visiting the Gulf of Carpentaria region.
Located about 7 km southeast of Weipa, the airport has a single passenger terminal and a 1,645-metre asphalt runway. Scheduled regional flights connect Weipa with Cairns and nearby Cape York communities such as Aurukun and Lockhart River.
The airport was developed in the early 1960s by Comalco to support the region's bauxite mining operations and is now operated by Rio Tinto Aluminium Weipa. Despite its industrial origins, it also serves the wider public and remains an important transport link during the wet season when road access can be difficult.
