About Wakunai Airport
Wakunai Airport is a small domestic airfield serving the communities of Wakunai and nearby Inus on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. Known by its IATA code WKN and ICAO code AYWQ, it provides a basic but important aviation link for local movement, government travel, medical access and charter flights in a region where road connections can be slow and weather-dependent.
The airport operates as a single-terminal, single-runway facility with limited infrastructure. Passenger services are basic, and flights are generally subject to weather and scheduling conditions, so travelers should confirm flight arrangements with their airline before departure.
Wakunai Airport is located close to Wakunai township and can be reached by local road transport. For longer journeys, travelers can continue toward Buka, Arawa, Kieta and other parts of Bougainville by pre-arranged vehicle or charter transport where available.
Although its facilities are limited, the airport remains a practical access point for visitors, aid workers, government representatives and local residents travelling to central Bougainville.
