About Vivigani Airfield
Vivigani Airfield is the airstrip serving Goodenough Island in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. Developed during World War II, the site became an Allied airbase with two parallel runways and later opened to commercial service in 1963.
After the last regular operator, Talair, ceased flights in 1993, the airfield saw little scheduled traffic for decades. Local landowners kept the sealed runway maintained, and weekly Tropic Air flights from Port Moresby resumed in 2021, restoring a key link for island communities.
The airfield lies on the northeast coast of Goodenough Island, about 9 km from Bolubolu, the island's main settlement. Flights to and from Port Moresby take around an hour and a quarter, while onward travel on the island is by pre-arranged vehicle or boat.
Passenger facilities are basic, reflecting the airfield's role as a remote community connection rather than a large commercial airport. Travelers should confirm flights and arrange island transport and supplies in advance.
