About Tokua Airport
Tokua Airport (RAB) serves Kokopo and Rabaul, the current and former capitals of East New Britain Province on the island of New Britain. It is the region's principal air gateway, connecting travellers to Port Moresby, Lae, Kavieng, Hoskins, Buka and other domestic destinations.
The airport was developed after the 1994 eruption of Tavurvur devastated Rabaul and put the old Rabaul Airport out of service. With Japanese assistance, a new airport was built at Tokua and opened in October 1998 as the replacement gateway for the area.
Tokua Airport has a single asphalt runway of about 1,720 metres and one compact passenger terminal handling domestic arrivals and departures. Air Niugini and PNG Air operate regular flights, mainly to and from Port Moresby.
The airport lies about 12 km from Kokopo and roughly 28 km from Rabaul, reached by the Kokopo–Tokua Road. Taxis, buses, private transfers and rental cars connect the airport with Kokopo, Rabaul, coastal resorts and other points across East New Britain.
