About Terapo Airport
Terapo Airport is a small domestic airfield serving Terapo Mission in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea. Located near the Lakekamu River, the airport lies roughly ten miles inland from the Gulf of Papua and provides an important air link for remote communities in the Kerema District.
The airfield has a single grass runway, designated 10/28, measuring about 840 metres. It primarily accommodates light aircraft and charter operations, with a compact terminal handling both arrivals and departures.
Kerema, the capital of Gulf Province, lies approximately 51 kilometres from the airport and is reached by road or river. Air travel remains one of the more practical ways to reach this isolated part of the southern coast, alongside limited overland and river transport.
The airport's history dates back to a pre-war mission station, and an airfield was later developed at Terapo during the Second World War. Today it continues to serve small aircraft and local travellers in a region where road access can be difficult.
