Tarcoola Airport (TAQ)

Tarcoola Airport (TAQ) is a small outback airfield serving Tarcoola in the Far North region of South Australia. It functions mainly as a general aviation facility supporting private flights, charter operations, mining activity and access to remote outback areas.

The airport is located roughly 125 km south of Coober Pedy, about 416 km north-northwest of Port Augusta and approximately 602 km northwest of Adelaide. It has two dirt runways, aligned 04/22 and 09/27, and operates without a passenger terminal or scheduled commercial airline services.

Tarcoola itself has long been a remote transport point: the town was established in 1901 during the gold mining era and later became a junction on the Trans-Australian Railway, with The Ghan and Indian Pacific passenger trains passing through. Road access connects the area to the Stuart Highway and regional routes toward Coober Pedy, Port Augusta and Adelaide.

Because the airport is remote and facilities are limited, travellers should plan refuelling, supplies and onward transport before arriving. For general aviation and charter users, it provides a practical landing point for reaching the surrounding desert country, mining sites and outback destinations.
