Shellharbour Airport is the main airport serving Wollongong and the Illawarra region of New South Wales. It began as RAAF Albion Park, built in 1942 as a World War II operational base, and later became a civil airport known as Illawarra Regional Airport before taking its present name in 2019.
The airport is located at Albion Park Rail near the junction of the Princes Highway and Illawarra Highway, about 17 km south of the Wollongong city centre and roughly 90 km south of Sydney. It functions as a compact regional gateway for the Illawarra, Shellharbour and the South Coast, with a single modern passenger terminal completed in 2021.
Owned and operated by Shellharbour City Council, the airport supports regional passenger services alongside general aviation and aviation business activity. The terminal provides check-in facilities, the Greenacres Café, free Wi-Fi, a waiting lounge and accessible amenities.
Road access is straightforward via the Princes Highway, and Albion Park Rail station on the South Coast rail line is about 900 metres from the terminal, connecting the airport with Wollongong and Sydney. Taxis, private transfers, shuttle services and car hire provide onward travel options.
